Clovis (c. 466 - 511)

Encyclopædia Orbis Latini

King of the Salian Franks (481-511), of the Merovingian dynasty, who conquered Northern Gaul (494), founding a kingdom that dominated western Europe.

He married (c. 493) Clotilda (c. 475-c. 545), a fervent Christian, whose efforts to convert him succeeded after an important victory over the Alamanni (496), when he was baptized with some 3000 warriors. He was regarded as defender of the faith against Arianism. After defeating the Visigoths near Poitiers (507), he established his capital at Paris. Clovis sponsored the promulgation of the Salic Law.
