King of the Ostrogoths (471-526), who ruled Italy (493-526).
He
defeated Odoacer in 493 and established an Ostrogothic kingdom with its
capital at Ravenna, ensuring peace by religious
toleration and marriage alliances with the other barbarian kingdoms. His
chief minister was Boethius. However,
territorial expansion brought conflict with the Frankish king
Clovis
and his death left Italy leaderless and ripe for Byzantine annexation.
