Occitan orthography uses acute and grave accents (as in é and è) and a few letter combinations (ch, tg, tj, lh, nh, tz, gn, rr and mp) for some specific sounds. The cedile (,) is used under the letter c to mark its pronunciation as [s] in front of a, o and u.

Three other letters -- K, W and Y -- are used in names and words of foreign origin.
